Word-by-word captions, already in sync
Word-by-word captions highlight each word as it is spoken, which keeps silent viewers reading. Most people watch Shorts and Reels with the sound off for the first few seconds. In Motion2D the captions are made with the video, from the same timing as the voice.
No caption editor needed
In CapCut, Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, word-by-word captions mean generating auto captions, fixing the mistakes and restyling them. Here there is nothing to fix, because the captions come from the script the narrator is reading, not from guessing at the audio.
Turn captions on or off per video. They work in every supported language, including right-to-left Urdu and Arabic.
- Highlighted word by word as it is spoken
- Placed clear of characters' faces
- Exact spelling from your script
When to turn them off
For long relaxed videos such as bedtime stories, captions can distract. For teaching, Shorts and anything that autoplays silently, leave them on.
Example: captions in a right-to-left language
An Urdu Short on the history of the Badshahi Mosque: the script is in Urdu, so the captions are written right to left in Urdu script, each word lighting up as the narrator says it. Spelling comes from the script, so names like Aurangzeb appear exactly as written rather than as an auto-captioner's guess.
That Short uses 1 credit at 20 seconds or 2 credits up to 60 seconds. More on Urdu videos on the Urdu animated video maker page.
Why captions matter for watch time
On phones, many viewers start a video muted. If nothing tells them what is happening, they scroll past. Captions also help viewers watching in a second language, viewers with hearing loss, and anyone in a noisy place. Accessibility guidelines recommend captions for recorded video with speech, so they are worth having even before you think about growth.
For Reels and Shorts, captions do most of the hooking in the first two seconds. See faceless Instagram Reels for how they fit a vertical video.
Questions and answers
How do I add word-by-word captions to a video?
In Motion2D, leave Captions switched on when you create the video. For other videos, editors like CapCut can generate them, though you will need to check the timing and spelling.
Are captions burned into the video?
Yes, they are part of the MP4, so they show on every platform.
Do captions work in Hindi, Urdu and Arabic?
Yes, in all 11 supported languages.
Can I change the caption style?
Captions use a bold, high-contrast style designed for phones. Custom fonts and colours aren't available yet.
Can I get a separate subtitle file?
Not yet. Captions are part of the video image. A separate SRT download is on our list.
Do captions cover the characters?
They're placed to stay clear of faces, and in 9:16 they sit where on-screen buttons won't hide them.
