Myths and legends, animated

Greek mythology videos and other legends are some of the easiest stories to animate: gods, monsters and impossible journeys, free to retell and endlessly popular. Motion2D draws the heroes and narrates the tale, in a gentle version for children or a dramatic one for adults.

Which myths to start with

Greek mythology is the most searched: Perseus and Medusa, the labours of Heracles, Persephone, Icarus. Norse myths, Egyptian gods, and folk tales from South Asia and the Middle East are less crowded and just as rich.

Ancient myths are in the public domain. Modern retellings, films and games are not, so tell the old story in your own words.

  • Greek, Norse, Egyptian and folk legends
  • Kid-friendly or dramatic versions
  • Series of connected episodes

For kids or for adults

Ask for a gentle version for children, with monsters that are more silly than scary, or a dramatic version for older audiences. The same myth makes two very different videos.

Example: Icarus for two audiences

Kids version, 3 minutes: Daedalus builds wings, Icarus is excited, the sun is warm and friendly, the lesson is gently about listening; 3 credits. Adult version, 8 minutes: the labyrinth, Minos's cruelty, the escape, the fall into the sea told with weight, and what the Greeks meant by hubris; 8 credits. Same myth, two channels.

Long episodes need careful structure; see long animated videos.

Beyond Greece

Less crowded mythologies are just as rich, and often have audiences hungry for good versions.

  • Norse: Thor, Loki, Ragnarok
  • Egyptian: Ra, Osiris, the weighing of the heart
  • South Asian: the Ramayana and Panchatantra fables
  • Persian: Rostam and the Shahnameh
  • Japanese and Chinese folk tales

Questions and answers

Can I make Greek mythology animation for kids?

Yes. Add for children, gentle to the topic and scary parts are softened.

Are myths copyright free?

The ancient stories are in the public domain. Specific modern versions are protected, so write your own telling.

Can I make a mythology series?

Yes. Use the same style notes and narrator for each episode so it feels like one series.

How do I keep gods looking the same across a series?

Describe each one identically in every video's notes, for example Athena: grey eyes, bronze helmet, owl on her shoulder.

Your next video starts with one sentence.

Type a topic. Motion2D researches it, writes it, draws it and voices it.
