Animation styles, and when to use each

The main types of animation styles are 2D cartoon, motion graphics, whiteboard, cut-out, 3D and stop motion, plus kinetic typography for animated text. Choosing a style is choosing a feeling: a whiteboard video feels like a lesson, a soft picture-book style feels like bedtime, a bold flat style feels like a startup.

The main styles

2D cartoon: characters with personality; stories, kids, YouTube. Flat motion graphics: shapes and icons; data, SaaS, ads. Whiteboard: drawn as you watch; lessons. Cut-out: paper-like layers; playful explainers. 3D: depth and realism; products and film. Stop motion: physical models photographed frame by frame; handmade charm.

Kinetic typography, which animates words themselves, is a style of its own and suits quotes and lyric videos.

Asking for a style in Motion2D

Motion2D makes 2D cartoon animation, and you can steer its look in the notes: soft picture-book colours, bold flat explainer style, moody night-time palette. Use Draw it again to try another look on the same script.

Styles by use case

The best style is the one that fits the message and the budget. A rough guide:

  • Kids stories and bedtime: soft picture-book 2D, rounded shapes, warm colours
  • Explainers and SaaS: flat 2D or motion graphics, bold colours, lots of white space
  • Lessons: whiteboard or clean 2D, so attention stays on the idea
  • History and documentary: painterly 2D with muted, period colours
  • Data and finance: motion graphics, charts and icons
  • Products: 3D, when the object itself must be seen

Example: one script, three looks

A 60-second script about the first moon landing, made three times with different notes. Retro 1960s poster style, orange and teal gives a nostalgic, collectible feel. Soft picture-book style for children turns it into a bedtime story. Moody, dark, cinematic suits a documentary channel. Same words, three audiences. In Motion2D that's Draw it again with new notes, 2 credits each time.

Words that change the look

When you describe a style, name the palette, the line and the mood. Palette: pastel, earthy, neon, black and white with one red accent. Line: thick outlines, no outlines, sketchy pencil. Mood: cosy, tense, playful. Three words, one from each, usually beat a long paragraph.

Questions and answers

What is the most popular animation style for explainers?

2D cartoon and flat motion graphics.

Which animation style is cheapest?

Simple 2D and motion graphics are usually the quickest and cheapest to produce.

Can I mix styles?

Yes, but keep one main style so the video feels consistent.

What animation style is best for YouTube?

For explainer and story channels, 2D cartoon is the most common because it's quick to make and reads well on phones. The best style for you is the one your niche's viewers respond to.

What is cut-out animation?

Characters made of separate flat pieces, like paper puppets, moved at the joints. South Park popularised the look.

Can Motion2D do anime or 3D styles?

It makes 2D cartoon animation. You can ask for anime-inspired colours and shapes, but not true 3D.
